R.I.P J Dilla: 1974 - 2006
Sometimes an artists legacy can only really be appreciated after their death, J Dilla (Jay Dee) has for years been one of hip hop’s most slept on producers/artists.
Since the early 90’s he has been crafting gems for hip hop’s finest, including work on seminal albums like “Beats, Rhymes And Life” (A Tribe Called Quest), “Like Water
For Chocolate” & “Be” (Common), “Mama’s Gun” (Erykah Badu), “Stakes Is High” (De La Soul), “Voodoo” (D’Angelo) & many more.
Dilla was a founding member of hip hop group Slum Village, was a contributing member of The Ummah and of the Soulquarians where he worked in combination with Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson (The Roots), James Poyser and D’Angelo.
Suffering for many years from a debilitating kidney condition called lupus nephritis, of late, his condition has worsened considerably and whilst on tour throughout Europe last year he was confined to a wheelchair during performances.
After recently releasing his “Donuts” LP, he again fell ill and died on February 10. He was 32.
His legacy will live on for many years to come, with many heads and fans alike only starting to grasp the extent of his genius and the significance of his work.
